Chris Evert is an 18-time Grand Slam singles champion who spent 7 years ranked #1 in the world. With the highest winning percentage in tennis history (.900) male or female, Chrissie is also the record holder for most singles titles in 2 of the 4 Grand Slams; the US Open (6) & French Open (7)!Likewise, Chris won at least 1 of the 4 possible Grand Slam singles titles for an unparalleled 13 consecutive years, an open-era record. Famous golfer Jack Nicklaus called this, "The greatest record in sports."Possibly of equal measure, however, is that she reached the semifinal round or better in the first 48 of 49 Grand Slams she played, covering the first 16 years of her career, and ended with a 52 of 56 semi-final or better showings.Another all-time record entirely unique to Chrissie's career is that she won a record 125 consecutive matches on a single surface, clay, spanning a near 6-year period between August 1973 and May 1979, which easily holds as the longest winning streak by any man or women in the Open Era. (That loss was by the score of 7-6 in the 3rd set to Tracy Austin in Rome)Equally staggering still, she then followed that up immediately with the second longest winning streak on clay ever, winning another 64 matches straight, for a remarkable 189-1 match record on clay surface court. This 2nd record held firm until Rafael Nadal won 81 in a row in 2007, as did Federer win 65 straight on grass in 2007! Chris still has the top 2 longest streaks of the women however. A winner of Wimbledon 3 times, it should be noted that she made the finals of that event 10 times. And as for the remaining Grand Slam event, she never failed to reach the finals of the Australian Open for any year she participated. Chris Evert won a record 157 Tournament Singles Titles after her 289th event. When Martina Navratilova matched her record, it was after Navratilova’s 343rd event. She is currently second to Navratilova, who topped out at 167 titles. In a final statistical feat of unmatched career consistency, Evert won more than half of the tournaments she entered throughout her 20 year career, made the finals in 76% of them, and made at least the semifinals in 90% of all the events she entered.
