(excerpt from the BOOK OF TENNIS RACKETS by Kuebler) The first company to produce tennis equipment on a large scale was founded in 1877 by three brothers, Albert, Horatio and Ralph Slazenger, who had been in the rain wear business in Manchester, England. They were also India rubber manufacturers and merchants. Their family name was then “Moss”. For some reason they then decided to name the new company “Slazenger & Sons” and moved it to London in 1878. The family name, “Moss”, probably also changed in 1884 to “Slazenger”.  Its foundation year coincided with the first Wimbledon Championships and, as the popularity of Lawn Tennis and many other sports began to grow, the company flourished. By the mid 1890 it became very substantial.
