Rare Maker Vintage Wood 1920 Sykes & Jefferies Maximus Tennis Racket EnglandMade in England; don’t see many early English rackets in the USA. Antique old early wood wooden racquet with deep wide grooves on only two sides.NOTE: Part of a group of rackets I just found. I will list one racket a day between September 17 and September 26. Will combine items for reduced postage for multiple purchases.MODEL: 1920 Sykes & Jefferies Maximus London & Horbury (near Sheffield) England. Sykes began making rackets in Horbury, English midlands, in the 1880s; they took over the Jefferies company in 1919.HEAD: Classic period elongated oval; stock is square at the shoulders and slightly chamfered as it goes around the top of the head WARPING: noneFRAME: retains much of original light paint wash finish; less than expected wear to the top of the headTHROAT WEDGE: Concave in the style of the periodSTRINGS: probably original lamb gut in intact condition with strings color coordinated with the rest of the racket decoration. No breaks in mains and crosses.BANDING: beautiful four original silk color coordinated green bands with white wrapping in wonderful intact conditionDECALS: As shown; just the one, beautiful and complete GRIP: 4 ¾ inches; unusual design: deep grooves in only two sides of the racketSTAMPS: Maximus as shown WEIGHT: weighs 13.0 ounces actual weightEND CAP: leather strip completely intact with almost no wear as shown in the photo; great green color coordinated end cap as shown: “WHEN NOT IN USE PLEASE KEEP IN A SENIOR SERVICES PRESS” plus Sykes & Jefferies LONDON HORBURYPostage will be based on 3.5 pounds of packed weight.
