Circa 1878-79, lop sided LAWN TENNIS RACKET111/2 oz by Percival king Edinburgh. VERY RARE EARLY 19 th century offset or lopsided tennis racket in OUTSTANDING CONDITION!!!! The retailer or maker is stamped on the neck P .KING EDINBURGH. P .KING is the Percival King who was a famous Scottish cricketer in the 19th century ( He was born in 1835 and died 1910 He ran a cricket and sporting odds shop in Lothian street Edinburgh Scotland from around 1875 to 1885 called kings cricket warehouse included a whole range of sporting goods from Football to golf and also lawn tennis items. I show in my pictures a copy of his advertisement in Scottish post office Directory for 1878-79.( not included for sale) The racket has been made with strong frame ( probably ash) and AMAZINGLY STILL HAS ORIGINAL GUT STRING WITH BEAUTIFUL RED GUT TREBLING,WITHOUT BRAKES. And , noticed from my picture, the unusual patter of lateral strings at the top and bottom of the head. This racket with the lopsided of tilt head is of style which was made in the late 1870s when LAWN tennis was first introduced by Major Walter C .Wingfield when it was called " SPHAIRISTIKE".
