~Peck & Snyder Flat Top Lawn Tennis Racket c.1983-84~ Peck & Snyder claimed to have been the first U.S. importer of "qualified" English tennis equipment, including rackets and Sphairistike tennis sets by "Jeffries". Extremely rare; this is the only version of Peck & Snyder's "top of the line" flat top racket (based on the inlaid handle feature) that I'm aware of. This racket was described in Kuebler's Book of Tennis Rackets as having an inlaid handle and sold for a whopping $10. I believe it may have just preceded "The Franklin" made in 1884,  Highest-end rackets of that era usually sold upwards of $5. As shown in an original illustration and commented by the author: "The concave frame is beveled on the inside edges of the hitting face starting at the shoulders so that the ball cannot hit the edge as shown on the patent drawing. This was also patented in England a few months later, June 7, 1884. Charles Malings from Jeffries was named as the inventor." There are corner cracks (pictured) - on one side going through one lamination, the other side going through barely two (of six laminations). The integrity of the hitting face is still strong. The frame has held it's shape beautifully; the triangular head is perfectly symmetrical and the racket shows no signs of warping. There was a neck collar - you can see a remnant of it in one of the images. With these exceptions, this lawn tennis racket is in fine condition for its age, with very minor signs of knocks and scratches. The inlaid handle is another highlight of the racket, very shiny and with barely a flaw. The wood butt cap - a nice touch too. The owner's initials "H.E.F." are carved into the throat. 26.5 inches long x 9.75 inches wide Please review the images carefully.
